The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and the University of Illinois, along with fellow consortium members of the C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute (C3.ai DTI) recently awarded $5.4 million to accelerate artificial intelligence research to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Illinois ECE Professor Tamer Başar, Assistant Professor Subhonmesh Bose, and Research Professor Narendra Ahuja, Donald Biggar Willett Professor Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering, were among the recipients of these awards.
According to a press release from the NCSA, 26 projects will receive funding and access to advanced computing and data resources provided by the C3.ai DTI consortium members and partners. The selected projects will address the pandemic from multiple fields including medicine, urban planning, public policy, computer science, and consider the racial, economic, and healthcare implications.
Ahuja's project "Adding Audio-Visual Cues to Signs and Symptoms for Triaging Suspected or Diagnosed COVID-19 Patients" was one of the awarded projects. His project fell under the category of Imaging/Computer Vision.
Bose's project "Dynamic Resource Management in Response to Pandemics" was also one of the awarded projects. His project fell under the category of Mathematical Modeling, Control, and Logistics.
Basar served as a Co-PI for the project "Algorithms and Software Tools for Testing and Control of COVID-19." His project fell under the category of Mathematical Modeling, Control, and Logistics.
