ECE ILLINOIS Professor Lynford L Goddard has been promoted to the grade of Fellow of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. Founded in 1955, SPIE partners with researchers, educators, and industry to help advance light-based research and technology. The promotion by SPIE from Senior Member to Fellow is a recognition of not only an individual's technical accomplishments but their service to the Society and to the general optics and photonics community over their career.
According to their website, SPIE serves more than 264,000 constituents from about 166 countries and advances emerging technologies through "interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth. SPIE also annually "organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific.
"One of my first conference talks was as a graduate student at SPIE Photonics West conference in 2004 and throughout my career, SPIE has enabled me to meet people with diverse interests and ideas at their industry-focused Advanced Lithography conference as well as at their more academia-focused Optics East and Photonics West conferences." Goddard is also affiliated with the MNTL and the Beckman Institute.
