Bayram granted patent for increasing efficiency of power conversion systems

ECE ILLINOIS Professor Can Bayram recently received a patent for his method of creating p-channel wide bandgap transistors which could increase the efficiency of wide bandgap based next generation power conversion systems.

ECE ILLINOIS Professor Can Bayram was recently granted a patent for his method of creating p-channel wide bandgap transistors, complementing the existing n-channel ones. 

Bayram's method essentially shows how to enable complementary wide bandgap logic using cubic GaN technology. Combined with his earlier published patent (US Patent #10,027,086) with ICORLAB, Bayram's new patent will enable integration of power and logic electronics on one compact platform (i.e. silicon), reducing the volume and cooling needs for advanced integrated electronics.

"This will help reduce the overall volume but increase the efficiency of wide bandgap based next generation power conversion systems. These systems will find use in powering high voltage high current systems such as electric cars, trains, and planes," says Bayram.
