On February 8, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) elected 84 new members and 22 foreign members, including several alumni from Engineering at Illinois.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Individuals in the newly elected class will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., later this year.
Alumnus Joe H. Chow (MSEE '75, PhD '78)Joe H. Chow (MSEE '75, PhD '78) is a professor of electrical and computer systems engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He was honored "for technical contributions to the modeling, analysis, and control of large-scale power systems."
Chow is currently researching with CURENT, the Center for Ultra-wide-area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks, funded by NSF and DOE. He previously worked on synchrophasor implementation projects involving research and development of phasor data systems and applications at power grid operators. Chow is also an expert in power system voltage stability analysis using PMU data.
