Schaubert, Daniel
2010 Distinguished Alumni Award
In recognition of pioneering research activities in the field of printed antennas, exemplary service to the IEEE, and outstanding teaching.
Dan Schaubert retired recently from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has 40 years of experience as an engineer, researcher, educator, administrator, and center director. Most of his technical contributions have been in the area of antenna design and development, but he has contributed also to computational electromagnetics, transient radiation and scattering, remote sensing, and bioelectromagnetics. His work on microstrip antennas includes patents for inductive post tuning and multifrequency antennas. His analysis of aperture-coupled patch antennas provides an understanding of the operating principles and a clear recipe for designing these antennas. He was elected Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions to microstrip antenna technology.
Before joining the University of Massachusetts, Dan worked for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services where he was instrumental in establishment of new procedures for testing microwave oven leakage. These new procedures led to more reliable test results and reduced cost.
He is the founding director of the Center for Advanced Sensor and Communication Antennas, a joint venture of the University of Massachusetts and the Air Force Research Laboratory. He was active in the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society, serving in several positions including president in 1999.
