Kliore, Arvydas

Arvydas J. Kliore was born in Lithuania in 1935 and immigrated into the United States in 1949. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1954. Since completing his education in the Big Ten (MSE, University of Michigan, 1957; PhD, Michigan State University, 1962), he has resided in Pasadena. He has been a Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology since 1989.
Since 1965, Kliore has been responsible for conducting spacecraft radio occultation experiments which have provided the direct measurements of the structures of the ionospheres and atmospheres of Mars (1965, 1967, 1971); Venus (1967, 1981); Jupiter (1973, 1996-1998); Io (1973, 1997); Saturn (1979, 2005); Titan (2006); and Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto (1997-2002). He has held the position of principal investigator on nine NASA radio science teams and is currently the leader of the Cassini Radio Science Team.
Kliore and his wife, Birute Anna Ulenas, have two daughters, Saule Kliore and Rima Kliore-Frederickson.
