ECE emeritus faculty member William H. Sanders has been awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional distinctions in engineering.

ECE emeritus faculty member William H. Sanders has been awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional distinctions in engineering. He is among a class of 106 new members and 18 international members announced by the academy on February 7.

SandersAn expert developer of technologies that ensure trustworthy infrastructure systems, Sanders’ achievements have focused on building societal-scale systems with quantifiable trust properties. He has published more than 300 technical papers on computer system reliability and security, resiliency metrics and evaluation. Sanders was cited by the NAE “for technical contributions and interdisciplinary leadership in cybersecurity and resiliency technologies for critical infrastructures.”

Sanders spent 25 years as a tenured professor in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at The Grainger College of Engineering, serving as the Herman M. Dieckamp Endowed Chair in Engineering and the interim director of the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) in the University of Illinois System. As head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2014 to 2018, Sanders was also the founding director of the University of Illinois’ Information Trust Institute and Director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory at Illinois. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery. 

Sanders currently serves as the Dr. William D. and Nancy W. Strecker Dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and a professor of electrical and computer engineering, computer science, and in the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. He is also an entrepreneur who co-founded Network Perception Inc.
