Alumnus earns highest professional distinction for academic inventors

ECE ILLINOIS alumnus Mark A. Griswold (BSEE '94) was elected into the National Academy of Inventors 2017 Fellows Program in recognition of his contributions to biomedical imaging.

ECE ILLINOIS alumnus Mark A. Griswold (BSEE '94) was recently elected into the National Academy of Inventors 2017 Fellows Program, the highest professional distinction that can be awarded to academic inventors. Currently, Griswold is a professor in the Department of Radiology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In addition to his degree from Illinois, he earned a doctorate in physics at the University of Wuzburg in Germany.

Griswold was elected as fellow for demonstrating "a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society." 

His background in computer science, physics, and electrical engineering have helped build his international reputation for being a pioneer and innovator in the field of biomedical imaging research. Griswold first came to Case Western Reserve to be an associate professor of radiology in 2005.

In the following year, he was appointed director of MRI research and in 2012, he became a full professor at the School of Medicine. According to the announcement, he has secondary appointments in the departments of Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science.
