Illinois ECE alumnus Jong Yoon Lee (BS CompE '18) was recently named in the 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Healthcare for his work with his startup Sibel Health, which develops wearable skin patches to monitor vital signs. Its original customers were hospitals in low-resource settings to monitor premature babies in the ICU.
Sibel Health's mission is "Better Data for All". Sibel Health plans on working with Fortune 500 companies to ask fundamental questions to allow health to be more accessible through smarter sensors and bring what was traditionally done in hospitals to home. Sibel Health also works with philanthropic organizations like the Gates Foundation to deploy their technology to low-to-middle-income countries.
“It’s such an honor to be named into this cohort," said Lee.
"Every day, I get to do what I love, which is using my engineering training to help patients worldwide. It was the incredible education I received at UIUC in Computer Engineering that has enabled me to do that - so I’m incredibly grateful and proud to be an alumni - and even more proud to count so many UIUC alumni as my teammates.”
"I want to thank Professor Wen-mei Hwu, who gave me the courage to pursue this path and the technical mentorship while I was a student of his."
