David grew up in Sydney, Australia. He went to college at the University of Toronto and graduate school at Stanford University, where his research was in image and video processing. He has interned at an online shopping startup (Like.com, later acquired by Google), at a software giant (Microsoft), and at a small research subsidiary of a telecommunications corporation (NTT DoCoMo Communications Laboratories USA). Before coming to the University of Illinois, David also worked as a research postdoctoral fellow (HP Labs) and as a quantitative modeler and consultant in the catastrophe insurance industry (Risk Management Solutions, Inc.)
