Research Statement

Professor Alleyne's research addresses a range of issues within controls: the analysis and design of control systems in a dimensionless framework, advanced motion control through iterative learning control and adaptive feedforward techniques, and robust control approaches to gain-scheduling as they relate to vehicle dynamics, large- and small-scale manufacturing systems and fluid power.

His recent research on the dimensionless analysis of control systems showed that the use of dimensionless form reduces parametric uncertainty with respect to controls, and that the parameters are interdependent. This research has the potential to impact the design of disk drives, cars and other ground vehicles, robots and satellites. He also incorporated time-frequency analysis into existing adaptive feed-forward techniques, which improved their tracking accuracy significantly. The resulting improvement in motion tracking performance allowed him to combine performance and robustness within a single algorithm, something that was previously an "either-or" situation.

On the technological side, he has developed a software tool that performs transient simulations of vapor compression cycle systems-something that was previously very difficult to model. He and his group developed Thermosys, a Simulink-based toolbox that provides one of the first simulation environments capable of handling dynamic transients. He has recently developed some of the first multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) models of powertrains for high efficiency control of off-highway vehicles, work that has drawn interest from Caterpillar.

Professor Alleyne is leading the campus effort for the new National Science Foundation Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power, based at the University of Minnesota. He, MechSE colleague Elizabeth Hsiao-Wecksler, and Department of Aerospace Engineering professor Eric Loth are working together to develop a small prosthetic device that uses fluid power to return flexibility of motion to people who have lost muscle control over their feet. He is also leading research on the coordination and control of power generation and power flow within a distributed network of connected components. He and other researchers at the Center for Nanoscale Chemical-Electrical-Mechanical Manufacturing Systems (NanoCEMMS) recently set new benchmarks for precision control and resolution in jet printing processes by developing methods that combine electrically induced fluid flow with nanoscale nozzles.
