Bhattacharya awarded NSF Graduate Fellowship for robotics

ECE ILLINOIS senior Anish Bhattacharya was selected as one of the honorees for the 2018 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) from out of more than 12,000 applicants. The NSF GRFP is the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind and has been funded over 50,000 fellowships since 1952. More than 450 Fellows have become members of the National Academy of Sciences and 42 Fellows have become Nobel prize winners. 

According to the NSF, the GRFP "recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions."

Bhattacharya will be attending the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science this upcoming fall for his graduate work. As an NSF Graduate Research Fellow, Bhattacharya will receive a three-year annual stipend and an allowance for tuition and fees along with opportunities for international research and professional development.

This past summer, Bhattacharya worked as a summer research intern for the MIT Lincoln Laboratory in which he focused on the use of deep learning techniques for automatic target recognition (ATR) with inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) sensing. As well as being a Stamps Leadership Scholar, Chancellor's Scholar, and James Scholar, Bhattacharya has been involved with Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and the Illini Table Tennis Club.
