Illinois ECE alumnus and IBM CEO Arvind Krishna (MS '87, PhD '91) discussed his first day as IBM CEO and IBM's role in the world amidst the COVID-19 pandemic through a letter on LinkedIn.

"If there's one thing that this public health crisis has brought to light it is the ever essential role of IBM in the world," Krishna stated in his letter. "We are the backbone of some of the most critical systems of the word. Our technologies and services help banks run credit card transactions, businesses run supply chains, telcos connect customers, healthcare providers improve patient care, and companies and cities tackle cyberthreats."

With hybrid cloud and AI posing as two of the most dominant forces driving change for clients, Krishna reiterated his belief that IBM could become the most trusted technology partner of the 21st century.

Additionally, Krishna announced IBM's development of a hybrid cloud. "IBM has already built enduring platforms in mainframe, services, and middleware," stated Krishna.

"I believe now is the time to build a fourth platform in hybrid cloud. An essential, ubiquitous hybrid cloud platform our clients will rely on to do their most critical work in this century."

Krishna also highlighted three main points for establishing IBM as a leader in the future of cloud, AI, blockchain, and quantum technology. First, Krishna emphasized the importance of deepening their understanding of the journey to hybrid cloud and AI. Secondly, Krishna stressed the importance of winning the architectural battle in cloud. Finally, Krishna focused on obsessing over continually delighting their clients.

"When this crisis ends, I'm confident that IBM will emerge strong and we will be focused on growth. Few companies have the trust, credibility and cumulative wisdom to change the fabric of society through technology the way that IBM can."
