The Information Trust Institute (ITI), a multidisciplinary, cross-campus research unit in the College of Engineering at Illinois, is seeking undergraduate applicants for its 2008 summer research internship program.

The internship, which pairs undergraduate students from around the world with ITI faculty members, enables participants to work on real-world research problems and interact with each other on an informal, individual basis. ITI researchers will supervise the selected students in a variety of information trust research areas, including security, reliability, safety, privacy, survivability, and correctness.

ITI held its first undergraduate internship program last summer, including 18 students from the United States, Serbia, India, and other locations. One-hundred percent of faculty and student participants who responded to a follow-up survey said they had a positive experience and would recommend other faculty and students to participate in the program, according to the ITI Web site. This year’s program will be directed by Computer Science Professor Samuel King.

Internships include a salary as well as a possible allowance for travel, moving, and housing expenses. Internships are intended to last eight to 10 weeks, but proposals for different lengths of time will be considered. All undergraduate students from any university are eligible to apply, while preferred candidates are sophomores or juniors.

Interested candidates must send their name, university affiliation, a short autobiography, e-mail address, mailing address, availability during summer 2008, preferred length of internship, preferred ITI faculty supervisor, and the names and contact information of two references to Dr. Masooda Bashir, assistant director of ITI, at mnb@iti.illinois.edu. Applications are due no later than Friday, February 29, 2008.

Candidates will be notified of their application status by mid-March.
