2007 Young Alumni Achievement Award
For interdisciplinary research and education in the field of nanoelectronic materials and devices.
Mark Hersam is a professor of materials science and engineering and chemistry at Northwestern University. His research interests include single molecule devices, nanofabrication, scanning probe microscopy, semiconductor surfaces, and carbon nanotubes.
Mark has received several awards, including the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Young Investigator Award, National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Searle Center for Teaching Excellence Fellowship, Army Research Office Young Investigator Award, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, and Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. In recognition of his early career accomplishments, Mark was directly promoted from assistant professor to full professor with tenure in 2006.
In addition to his academic training, Mark has been employed by Argonne National Laboratory and IBM T. J. Watson Research Center where he performed research on surface acoustic wave sensors and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes respectively.
In 2007, Mark co-founded NanoIntegris, a start-up company focused on supplying high-performance carbon nanotube materials.
