Official Description
Subject offerings of new and developing areas of knowledge in electrical and computer engineering intended to augment the existing curriculum. See Class Schedule or departmental course information for topics and prerequisites. Course Information: May be repeated in the same or separate terms if topics vary.
Section Description
Topic: Semiconductor LED and Solar Cell. Prerequisites: ECE 329 and ECE 340. This introductory course on semiconductor LEDs and Solar Cells for energy conversion is designed for seniors and graduate students in the ECE department. This course is divided into three major parts: The first part introduces radiative and non-radiative recombination processes in semiconductors and electrical and optical properties of LEDs. In the second part, advanced resonant-cavity and transistor-based LEDs, their RF modulation characteristics, and Holonyaks LED diagrams for the ultimate lamp are discussed. The final part discusses PINs and Solar Cell CPVs for solar energy conversion. The course is designed at a level such that ECE 340 is required and ECE 388 is preferred.
