ECE ILLINOIS PhD student [profile:jyu79] was recently awarded the highly competitive Baidu Scholarship. The scholarship is a highly competitive award established to recognize PhD candidates working on AI-related fields including deep learning, machine learning, computer vision, and more.

Yu's research primarily focuses on machine perception, generative models, and high-performance computing. He developed a deep learning-based, image-hole-filling technology called "DeepFill" and presented his work at the annual 2017 Adobe MAX event. Based on deep generative neural networks and trained through millions of images, DeepFill can be used to remove distracting objects or retouch undesired regions in images.

The Baidu Scholarship provides financial support of roughly $30,000 for a span of two years to ten students selected out of thousands of applicants. "The outcomes of my research have great potential to power humans with more artificial intelligence technologies in everyday life. It is my great honor that my research is recognized and supported by the Baidu Scholarship committee," says Yu.
