ECE ILLINOIS alumnus Dr Alfred Cho (BSEE '60, MSEE '61, PhD '68) was one of the 2018 Edison Patent Award Winners and Special Individual Honorees. The Research & Development (R&D) Council of New Jersey recognized 15 organizations with the 2018 Edison Patent Award and 61 inventors at the 39th Edison Patent Awards Ceremony and Reception in Jersey City. To select the winners, the Council assembled a committee of top state researchers across STEM disciplines who judged nominations based on the significance of the problem researched, novelty and utility of the patent, and the patent's commercial impact.

The R&D Council honored Cho with the Science and Technology Medal. Focusing on semiconductor devices, Bell spent his career at Bell Labs and is recognized as the co-inventor and principal developer of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), for which he was awarded the National Medal of Science by former President Clinton and the National Medal of Technology by former President George W. Bush.

Cho was inducted to the Illinois Engineering Hall of Fame in 2011 and is a distinguished alumni of ECE ILLINOIS. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Third World Academy of Sciences, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, and the American Philosophy Society.
