The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is ranked 37th among universities worldwide and 19th among U.S. universities in the most recent Nature Index, based on counts of high-quality research outputs from September 1, 2016, to August 31, 2017.

Nature Index is a database of author affiliation information compiled by Nature Research and collected from research articles published in an independently selected group of 68 high-quality science journals. The Nature Index provides a close to real-time proxy for high-quality research output at the institutional, national, and regional level.
