John Hebda is the principal of global business strategy at Google, where he has been since 2012. His team supports Google’s chief business officer, helping to set and implement the company’s global sales strategy. In addition to his ECE degree, Hebda holds an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
As an undergraduate at Illinois, Hebda started OTCR, an entirely student-run group that provides consultation to businesses ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small startups. Hebda is now on OTCR’s board of advisers. “It was very challenging, but we had a lot of fun,” Hebda said of creating the group. “This helped me realize that it’s possible to quickly have an impact, even at a big place like a university, with the right people and hard work.”
Accordingly, Hebda urges current students to take full advantage of extracurricular opportunities on campus. “Sure, you can just come to campus, go to class, and collect your report card, but there’s so much more than that to be gained if you look around and get involved,” he said. “If you don’t see an opportunity to get involved in what you’d like, then create one.”
Beyond his work at Google, Hebda is an outdoors enthusiast who relishes California’s hiking trails and ski slopes. He has competed in two Ironman triathlons and several marathons, and he has been training for his first ultramarathon.
