David Craig is a senior staff engineer and manager at Qualcomm, a San Diego-based semiconductor company that designs and manufactures wireless telecommunications products. Craig is responsible for developing software architecture for multi-site project development. Among his recent projects is the Connectivity Engine, a software solution that intelligently manages network connections for mobile devices. He currently holds three patents, including two developed with Professor Constantine Polychronopoulos.

For Craig, one of the most significant aspects of studying at ECE ILLINOIS was the breadth of faculty expertise. “Take full advantage of the knowledgeable and helpful faculty that only a university the size of Illinois offers,” Craig advises current students. “These are the experts in the fields that you eventually will work in, and the insights of their research will help you develop an important instinct that will guide you in your future endeavors.”

As a student at Illinois, Craig recalls a particular quiz that ingrained the importance of engineering with market considerations in mind. There was a question pertaining to transistor fabrication. Although Craig suggested a possible fabrication method, the instructor, Professor Emeritus Nick Holonyak Jr., called Craig's solution a “$1 million transistor” and awarded 2 points out of 10.

“I learned to appreciate how well engineering dovetails with business,” Craig said, reflecting on that quiz. “We don’t just build the devices that help the world go around, we constantly keep in mind that we must do it in a manner that’s responsible.”

Outside of work, Craig enjoys tinkering with embedded software development for robotics and home automation projects. He also volunteers as a mentor for high school robotics and judges collegiate hackathons.
